Bristle or electronic: how do you choose a dartboard?
A bristle dartboard is played with steel-tip darts. You keep score yourself. The range includes the Winmau Blade 6, the Blade 6 Dual Core and a basic bristle dartboard. There are also Winmau models such as the Yorkshire, Lincoln, London 5’s and Ipswich 5’s.
With an electronic dartboard you play with soft-tip darts, which have a plastic point instead of a steel one. The board keeps score automatically and offers lots of game variations. The Harrows Masters Choice Series 3, for example, has 27 games for 1 to 8 players and an LCD screen. The Karella comes in a cabinet and is suitable for up to 16 players. These boards run on mains power with the supplied adapter, so make sure there’s a socket nearby.
A dartboard for the whole family
Playing with children or with players of different levels? The Winmau Green Zone Dual Core has a handicap system, developed with the Junior Darts Corporation, that lets players of all ages and abilities play together. On electronic boards such as the Viper and the Karella you can also play against the computer, which is handy if you want to practise on your own.
Hanging a dartboard: the official height and distance
Under the official rules, the centre of the bull is 173 cm above the floor. For steel-tip, the throw line (oche) is 237 cm from the front of the board, measured horizontally. Choose a solid wall with clear space around the board, and allow for darts that miss the board.
Dartboard with darts or on its own?
